Veiled Science (Sirius/Teddy/Victoire, NC-17, warnings): (Okay, this is hard. I want to flail and glee and grin all over the place, but I also don't want to give away any spoilers ... ack! Bear with me, please!) This is a Really Smart Fic that is (maybe at First Glance) a plot-what-plot fic, but even the most cursory reading of it will make you think Deep Thinky Thoughts about life and death and the afterworld and What-Exactly-Is-Behind-That-Veil-Anyway. And one of those Really Smart Fics that do an amazing job of characterization via seeming plot-what-plot, and the characterization is amazing.

Also, it is Really Hot. Did you see me mention the plot-what-plot bit? Like I said, it is not exactly that, but there is a lot of Things What Maybe Should Be Happening In Bed (or not in bed, as the case may be. But if there was a bed, that would be okay, too.) Really Hot, all right? So mind the warnings, since there are some, and maybe you shouldn't read this if you don't like the warnings (although, you know, it is meant to be Kinky Kristmas, right? So maybe you will like this, Dear Reader! Because - like I said - it is Awesome.)

Persuasion (Pike/Spock, R): Okay, so there are Many Excellent Reasons why you might think of a Jane Austen novel upon reading the title of this fic. (I mean, there are ships and starships, and the title is the same, and all that...) But fortunately, Spock is not A Very Persuadable Silly Girl, the way Anne rather was, and he doesn't let anyone muck up his life for seven years. Because that would be Quite Tragic, and we would have missed out on all the Wonderfulness that happens in this fic.

This is like, perfect Spock. He's clearly alien - and watching Chris figure that out is delightful - and trying to understand human customs, and through it all, he's beautifully characterized. And he and Chris are perfect, the way they come together in this. This is My Sort Of Romance, really, because it is not-too-sappy and not-too-sad, and passes all the other tests that Goldilocks would go through before determining that it is Just Right For Her. (Although ... really, Goldilocks? Too hot? I'm not sure there is such a thing...)

Go! Read! Make the holidays merry and read a lovely story ... and make the authors happy by leaving them a comment! :D

The fifth thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me: Five months of bills!

Draco stared at the roll of parchment that seemed to stretch from one end of the house to another.

"What's this, then?" he wondered, proud of the fact that his voice was calm.

"A list of things I bought for the orphanages and Hogwarts." Harry told him, checking something on the parchment to the items in the large box on the floor.

"And what, exactly, did you buy for the little tykes?"

"Clothes, toys, a couple of Christmas trees, lights, stockings, four large Christmas hams..." As Harry rattled off his extremely large list, Draco clenched his fist at his sides and counted backward from seven million...in Swahili.

An hour later...

"...new cauldrons, potions supplies, new Quidditch gear, brooms, new tables for the Great Hall, and dinnerware." Harry finished, "You're angry."

Draco let out a slow steady breath, "I'm not angry. I'm just wondering why you felt the need to buy it all at once."

"Because it's Christmas and I wanted to. I never had a lot when I was younger and now that I have so much, I want to give back to the very people who accepted me, made me feel like I belonged here."

"Sounds like a good reason to me." Severus nodded.

"You okay with this?" Harry wondered. Draco saw the saddened look in his lover's eyes and felt his heart melt. He smiled and pulled Harry into his arms.

"It's fine, Harry."

"Thanks, love." Harry whispered in his ear.

The sixth thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me: facing the in-laws...

Draco bit back the words that wanted to escape when he stepped out of the floo. All he could see was a room full of red hair and freckles. One of the twins (and it galled him to no end he still couldn't tell them apart after all these years) instantly latched on to his leg and wouldn't let go.

"Merry Christmas, Uncle Draco." the little ball of energy smiled up at him.

In for a knut... "Merry Christmas, Charity." Draco replied. The 6-year old girl clinging to his leg smiled widely at him, revealing two missing teeth.

"You remembered my name this time!" He bent down and pulled the littlest Weasley into his arms.

"Well so I did. And where is your sister?"

"Serenity took Uncle Harry into the back to show him her new broom. Grandma Molly said we could try them out tomorrow."

"Draco! You made it!" exclaimed Molly, coming into the kitchen. She took Charity from him and shooed her into the living room before taking Draco's things and shoving a glass of eggnog into his hands. He set it down quickly when she wasn't looking and waded his way through the sea of Red to join his partners near the warm fire beside the Christmas tree.

This may be the best Christmas yet, if I'm starting to tolerate The Weasleys. Draco thought to himself as he pulled Harry into his arms. Harry smiled at him and rested his head on Draco's shoulder as the soft sounds of a Christmas melody filtered from the wireless.

Ever wonder why the fuck you bother? I do.

For the second day of Christmas, I wanted to give props to eeyore9990. For starters, Eey just plain makes fandom fun. She recs, she writes (well, I might add), she betas, she cheerleads, she stands up for people who can't stand up for themselves. She is one of my favorite people in fandom. Plus, she's funny as heck and tells the best anecdotes. She's also super open-minded and always there for me when I need to try a new kink but sort of need someone to hold my hand, and her ability to brainstorm is second to none. Seriously, I have a fest fic coming up and it would have been just a regular old smutty fic, but Eey helped me come up with an ending that had me roaring with laughter! I can't help but feel a bit smug today. I won the fest lottery--again!--over on snapelyholidays! I know there are a ton of you on my flist who are true and deep fans of Snermione, and as such, you will want to rush over to read my gift: Out of This World.

This fic is so peaceful and gently written, infused with wry humor and Muggle history. The setting is perfect, the character development believable and true, and the relationships between them all (there is a supporting cast that comes as a bit of a pleasant surprise) comfortable and secure.

Whoever my mystery author is put a lot of time and research into this fic and it shows. The pacing is perfect and the whole feel of the story is fantastically suited to each section. That's... probably an odd way of putting it, but the story goes through more than one moment in time.

I loved this fic. I'm feeling floaty and peaceful after having read it, and considering what a shit day I had yesterday, that's really kind of awesome. If the author is on my flist, THANK YOU! You've made my week with this, if not my month and year as well!

I've decided that for the next few weeks, I'm going to do appreciation posts. It's sort of like a twelve days of why fandom rocks so hard.

So! First up--accioslash. For starters, her holiday card made me squawk with laughter, then immediately become envious I hadn't thought of it first. accioslash's writing and drawing is usually like that. I have a tremendous admiration for her work, but at the same time I never fail to go, "Damn! Why wasn't I clever enough to have come up with that! Not fair!" A big part of that is because Accio has that fabulous sense of humor I admire so much; sly and twinkly with just enough of the ribald to be truly, truly awesome. She manages to be enormously entertaining no matter what the subject. Moreover, I had the wonderful experience of hanging with her in person at Terminus, and it was a highly entertaining visit. Her humor and talent add so much to our fandom!

Daily Deviant's Kinky Kristmas continues to be an awesome fest filled with "Things That Make Me Happy." The art and fic is totally worth spending a few hours devouring, and best yet, nothing is too long.

happy_trekmas started posting and for me, it's hard to rec fic over there because I am as multi-shippy as it's possible to get, so EVERYTHING appeals. However, I will definitely say that the art is not to be missed. I don't care WHAT your shipping preferences are, it's just lovely. Here are two fine examples:

Personal Physician is a Jim/Bones fic PLUS art combo that is just... zomgholycow to die for. Seriously good and gorgeous and I can't say enough about it. :D

Doube Ridged is Jim/Spock art. Guhhhhh, I uh, may have stared a hole into my screen at this. Also, it made me laugh my ass off!

One piece of art that wasn't in happy_trekmas but which I have to rec just because it's brilliant and deserves recognition is Kirk/McCoy and it's just GORGEOUS!

Gah, fests I haven't really had a chance to read: bestmates_xmas. I'm falling behind, y'all. I know there are several fics just in Kinky Kristmas I haven't had a chance to read, much less the hundred others posting at the moment.

And seriously, SERIOUSLY, if you read a fic/view art and you like it, even a little bit?? LEAVE A COMMENT. That is like, the reason we do this. Well, that and because the voices won't shut up. But still. Comments are like little pieces of purest chocolate.

And who doesn't like chocolate?

...And I am still in the single digit numbers. But you know it's a good fest when you've read less than half a dozen stories and you can practically rec them all.

Normally, I am not a big fan of werewolf fic. I like weres as much as anything but God, they are so easy to mess up. Not this time. I loved the story to bits. It has an interesting, believable and well-backed plot. It has a fantastic Draco, who is himself even when he is not; who struggles for control, wins and loses, and you can totally feel him do it. It's Draco. But he's a werewolf, and the author never lets you forget that, feeding you gentle, vivid reminders that enhance your whole perception of the world of the story. The H/D interaction is beyond delicious, can we say scorching hot? Decidedly :) And there are some very precise insights into Draco's character that are hiding behind the excuse of the werewolf etiquette.

And being the language-h0r that I am, I can't help but point that the use of the English language is brilliant. The quality of the writing is excellent. As I said in my comment, it's not only the great H/D that makes you love that story, it's the quality of how it's written, too.

I have strong suspicions who the author might be, though I am still unsure if they are taking part in the fest. But regardless if this is the next gem from a well-settled ficcer or a new star, the story is well-worth it!

Draco let the words sink in. There was so much not being said. It was all there, hidden beneath the surface: Potter's motivation. Draco inhaled deeply and there it was, faint but unmistakable, now that he thought to look for it. "Who is he?" Draco sniffed again. "I can smell him on you." The thought turned the soup in his stomach rancid.

Potter's sharp intake of breath and step backwards was as good as an admission.

"Who. Is. He?" Draco growled. "A school friend? An old lover?" He gritted his teeth and waited for Potter to find his voice.

Beware the virtual currency scams!

Health insurance industry trade groups opposed to President Obama's health care reform bill are paying Facebook users fake money -- called "virtual currency" -- to send letters to Congress protesting the bill.

Here's how it's happening:

Facebook users play a social game, like "FarmVille" or "Friends For Sale." They get addicted to it. Eager to accelerate their progress inside the game, the gamers buy "virtual goods" such as a machine gun for "Mafia Wars." But these gamers don't buy these virtual goods with real money. They use virtual currency.

* By accepting offers from third-parties -- usually companies like online movie rentals service Netflix -- who agree to give the gamer virtual currency so long as that gamer agrees to try a product or service. This is done through an "offers" provider -- a middleman that brings the companies like Netflix, the Facebook gamemakers, and the Facebook gamemaker's users together.

It's this third method that an anti-reform group called "Get Health Reform Right" is using to pay gamers virtual currency for their support.

Instead of asking the gamers to try a product the way Netflix would, "Get Health Reform Right" requires gamers to take a survey, which, upon completion, automatically sends the following email to their Congressional Rep:I am concerned a new government plan could cause me to lose theemployer coverage I have today. More government bureaucracy will onlycreate more problems, not solve the ones we have."

I have just two - count em, TWO - more batches of caramel corn and DOBBY IS FREE!!!!!! True, nothing is baked for my own family but I never want to see another cookie again. So it's all good. ;D The marathon cookie baking is used as client gifts and the list grows each year. If anyone other than Al volunteered me for so much non-Snarry related work, I would have poisoned their tea by this point. I should have had everything out by the 6th, but instead it all has to be out by tomorrow. There's too much to do otherwise and I have been baking/icing/dipping 16 hours a day for the past eight days. I'm goofing off resting now and will finish up tonight. Then I can start buying gifts. *sigh*

And speaking of gifts - OMG, so much pretty art has come my way in the past week. There is seekrit art for the Snarry-a-Thon banner which I'm dying to show everyone now *swoons* as well as a few more Snarry pieces that should be appearing by their various creators soon. Until then, perselus drew me another Merlin piece that I can share now. It is mild, but still NWS. I count myself surprised now that Hagrid survived as well, though perhaps his survival had less to do with Dumbledore's plans and more to do with his own resourcefulness, much like mine.
